AutoPilot Drive Units

HYDRAULIC STEERING:
Boats with hydraulic steering use a reversing pump connected to the existing steering system. Pilot type is determined primarily by the total steering capacity of the existing system.

MECHANICAL STEERING:
Linear drives are used by most sailboats and by powerboats with mechanical steering. The cylinder is generally attached to a separate tiller arm connected to the rudder shaft.

The information above is presented as a general guideline for the proper selection of autopilot drive units. The drive unit requirement will determine which Advanced Control Processor (ACP) system is needed to complete the installation. The primary consideration in determining the drive unit type is boat displacement.

In addition to boat size, the proper selection of a hydraulic pump for hydraulic systems will be further defined by the total capacity or displacement of the boat's steering system.
